Description

The Queensland Native Mounted Police (NMP) were a nineteenth century, government-sanctioned, paramilitary force whose job was to ensure that any resistance by Aboriginal land owners was subdued quickly and effectively so that colonisation of the State could proceed. For the past four years, Dr Lynley Wallis and colleagues have been investigating the historical archaeology of the NMP. As their project moves into its final year, they reflect on some of the key findings of their research, exploring some of the historical sources they have uncovered and the archaeological sites they have excavated, and considering the challenges they have faced in researching such a contentious and, for many of the descendants of people whose lives were impacted by this notorious force, highly sensitive topic.
