Discretio: Heloise of the Paraclete's embodied reading of the Rule of Benedict

Abstract

Heloise of the Paraclete’s (d. 1164) lived the major portion of her life as Benedictine nun. Her critique of the Rule of Benedict is situated within Letter 6 of her later correspondence with Abelard. However, I will argue that Heloise is more aptly described as a faithful interpreter of, and commentator on, the Rule of Benedict for her time. Her “critique” is an expression of her commitment to the key precept of adaptation required by the Rule itself.
