Description

Opportunities for Indigenous rangers and Elders to come together to specifically talk about managing and conserving rock art are few and far between. In March 2023, the ‘Gariwerd Rock Art Management Forum’ was held in Halls Gap, Victoria hosted by Barengi Gadjin Land Council Aboriginal Corporation (BGLCAC), Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation (EMAC), Gunditj Mirring Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation (GMTOAC), Parks Victoria (PV) and the Nulungu Research Institute from the University of Notre Dame Australia (UNDA). This opportunity brought together more than 150 Indigenous rangers and Elders from across Australia to discuss and share experiences, issues and opportunities for Indigenous land managers to care for cultural heritage and particularly rock art sites out on Country. The forum followed-on from the 2017 Marnda Gardairri: Aboriginal Ranger Rock Art Management Workshop hosted by Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation and Nulungu in Karratha.

The five-day forum involved presentations from rangers on specific issues and a day of visiting sites on Country, including rock art places within the Gariwerd Landscape that is jointly managed by the Traditional Owner groups and Parks Victoria. This collaboration was initiated to support the broader management of rock art across the state. Collectively we have been working towards planning for this event for the past couple of years (interrupted by COVID-19) and in the interim this has supported a range of activities including training and applied rock art conservation (including graffiti removal). Integral to the event, the organisers collectively developed the program which explored existing management strategies with Indigenous land managers across Australia to identify future opportunities both on Jadawadjali and Djabwurrung Country and other locations. Issues such as graffiti, visitor and fire management were key themes at the forum framed by intangible heritage.

Funding was received through an Australian Heritage Grant to support staging this initiative and outcomes from this event will include the development of a Practical Guide for Indigenous Rangers in the Management of Rock Art Cultural Landscapes in Australia. As part of the forum, we will also produce an artistic communal canvas to illustrate our journey through this week and showcase an exhibition of images of Gariwerd by renowned photographer John Gollings. Representatives from each of the collaborative partners will present on the forum and the steps ahead.
