Description
The ‘History Wars’ sparked a flurry of research into the nature and extent of Aboriginal-settler frontier violence. While vital, this research has been limited to written records largely excluding Indigenous voices.
The Archaeology of the Queensland Native Mounted Police is a multi-institutional Australian Research Council Discovery Grant project that involves Dr Lynley Wallis of Nulungu, and researchers Assoc. Prof. Heather Burke (Flinders University), Professor Bryce Barker and Dr Kelsey Lowe (University of Southern Qld), Emeritus Professor Iain Davidson (University of New England), Dr Noelene Cole (James Cook University) and Ms Liz Hatte (Northern Archaeological Consultancies), working closely with several Aboriginal communities across Cape York Peninsula, northwest Qld and Central Qld.
They argue that in order to attain a more holistic and sophisticated insight into the complexities of the frontier an entirely different lens should be used to approach the debate: the material evidence for the Queensland Native Mounted Police (NMP) and their activities—both violent and mundane.
