The 2011 speaker is Ms June Oscar, a member of the Bunuba language group from Fitzroy Crossing in the West Kimberley. June is an important Aboriginal leader who works tirelessly to address social justice issues that impact on Aboriginal people, with a focus on improving the lives of Aboriginal people living in the Fitzroy Valley, especially that of children, women and the elderly.
June has been a past Deputy Director of the Kimberley Land Council and is currently the CEO of Marninwarntijura Women’s Resource Centre in Fitzroy Crossing, a Director of Bunuba Films Inc and is the Chairperson of the Kimberley Language Resource Centre. In 2009, June presented at the New York United Nations with the Human Rights Commission on her role in introducing the alcohol restrictions in Fitzroy Crossing and in 2010 was inducted into the W.A. Women’s Hall of Fame. June is currently a cultural and language consultant with the ‘Jandamarra’ stage production currently touring the Kimberley region.
