Abstract

Student groups at The University of Notre Dame Australia are calling on university students and the local community to have their say about the future of Fremantle, one of Western Australia's most significant cities, during a public forum on Thursday, 11 October 2012.

The Notre Dame Australia Labor Club and the UNDA Liberal Club have collaborated to deliver the Freo Futures Project 2012 forum to promote active citizenship and political debate in the community.

Students will create and present ideas on how to improve Fremantle's city-centre to an expert panel. The panel will then discuss and debate these ideas with the public. An audience question and answer session will conclude the forum.

The expert panel will consist of:

  • Vice Chancellor of The University of Notre Dame Australia, Professor Celia Hammond
  • Mayor of the City of Fremantle, Dr Brad Pettitt
  • Chief Executive Officer of the Fremantle Chamber of Commerce, Tim Milsom
  • President of the Fremantle Society, Roel Loopers

The forum will be chaired by Senior Lecturer in Politics and International Relations on Notre Dame's Fremantle Campus, Dr Martin Drum.

"We see the Freo Futures Project 2012 as a great opportunity for students to meaningfully contribute to their city," said Jarrad Goold, President of the Notre Dame Labor Club.

"Some of the topics for discussion could include the high cost of living, terracing of the cappuccino strip, the future of the Fremantle Dockers, and incentives to reduce alcohol-related violence in the city."

UNDA Liberal Club President, Michelle Jack, says the forum is an excellent opportunity for students to propose ways to improve the vibrant Fremantle city-centre.

"We look forward to a lively discussion, well informed proposals and hearing the perspectives of our panellists," Ms Jack said.
