Abstract

The University of Notre Dame Australia is calling its staff and students to World Youth Day Rio 2013. The road to a World Youth Day celebration is littered with festivities, and friends of the University can join the latest gathering, the Notre Dame National Pilgrimage Launch, on Wednesday 15 August in the Broadway Courtyard between 10.00am and 3.00pm.

On the day, discover there is such a thing as a free lunch, if you are wearing WYD memorabilia. Those who don't don the obligatory red and yellow can still enjoy free popcorn and snacks, live music and, for a small donation, a barbecue lunch and cake stall. Notre Dame staff and student volunteers will be distributing WYD 2013 information packs to those interested in making the pilgrimage to Rio.

Pilgrims from Notre Dame will be led on a 19-day journey through Peru and Brazil by His Eminence Cardinal George Pell and Fr Lam Vu OFM Cap. A series of fundraisers will be held in the lead-up to the pilgrims' July departure, with efforts being spearheaded by two Notre Dame WYD Ambassadors, Philosophy and Theology student Rian Galliot and Education student Jessica Touma.

Vice Chancellor Professor Celia Hammond said she hoped staff and students would consider deepening their faith through the World Youth Day pilgrimage.

"For the very first time in the University's history, we hope to bring together students and staff from each of our campuses around Australia, to celebrate and reignite our Catholic faith with the universal Church in Rio," Professor Hammond said.

"Led by our very own Chaplains and Convenors, you will have the wonderful opportunity to meet with other students to experience the joy and truth of our faith with millions of other young Catholics. It is my hope that you will join our University and the Sydney Archdiocese on this incredible adventure and encounter the true, good and beautiful our faith has to offer you. This is your time and your opportunity."

The Sydney Chaplaincy team looks forward to welcoming all Notre Dame staff and students to the National Pilgrimage Launch. If you have an enquiry about WYD 2013, contact Chaplaincy Convenor Jessica Langrell at jessica.langrell@nd.edu.au.
