Abstract

The University of Notre Dame Australia awarded Penrhos College graduate Sophie Dixon the inaugural Clem and Rita Honnor Perpetual Scholarship at its annual Awards Evening held in March.

The purpose of the scholarship is to assist a student from regional Western Australia who wishes to commence their undergraduate studies in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Notre Dame’s Fremantle Campus.

The scholarship has been funded by Mr John Honner, a retired farmer from Narrogin, and a long and distinguished benefactor to Notre Dame.

Mr Honner donated $100,000 in 2011 to the University to establish the Endowed Scholarship in honour of his parents Clem and Rita Honner. Mr Honner has also funded the Justin John Honner Scholarship - a three-year undergraduate Nursing scholarship for students living in the State’s central South West region in memory of his late son Justin.

Ms Dixon is originally from Narembeen, 300km east of Perth. She was a boarder at Penrhos College and was nominated by the College for Notre Dame’s Early Offer program. Ms Dixon will be studying a Bachelor of Nursing and a Pre-Medicine Certificate.

Mr Honner says he is delighted that he has been able to support Ms Dixon in her education.

“It is my hope that this scholarship will relieve some financial pressure for her and for future recipients,” Mr Honner said.

“It is often the case that country students are not only faced with not having close family to support them while they study but are also challenged to find suitable accommodation for the duration of their studies.
“It disappoints me that there are so few scholarships available for rural students wanting to further their education by attending university.

“I would like to congratulate Sophie Dixon who is a worthy recipient of the Clem and Rita Honner Perpetual Scholarship.”

Notre Dame’s Early Offer Program gives secondary schools the opportunity to nominate their students for tertiary studies at the University. Nominations are received from private and government secondary schools throughout Western Australia.
