Abstract

Sarah Hawkins and Ingrid Crofts have enjoyed their semester studying on the Broome Campus.

The second year nursing students both chose to transfer from the Fremantle Campus to gain experience for working in remote communities.

“I thought it was a good opportunity to get a different view of nursing,” says Sarah.
“It’s a good opportunity to expand your nursing skills and enhance your career opportunities, too.”

Living in the Student Village has helped both students settle into Broome life. For Sarah the move was her first away from home, but the experience is now one she recommends to others.

“You’re always in good company and everyone is really friendly," she says. “It’s a lot of fun to get away from Perth by yourself and experience a different way of life.”

Ingrid, too, sought the remote experience and has enjoyed it so much she is now considering extending her stay for another semester.

“Broome is a great place to study. Everyone here makes sure you feel so comfortable. The lecturers are great, and all the students here know each other really well,” she says. “Everyone can panic together when it comes to exams and then celebrate together when it’s all over. We’re all really good friends now. It’s just been the best time ever.”
