Abstract

Notre Dame student nurses, Jeremy Waun and Ellie Ritchie have been awarded scholarships totalling $34,000 for the remainder of their degrees.

Jeremy Waun was awarded an Aged Care Nursing Scholarship by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing and Ellie Richie received an Edith Cavell Trust Scholarship from the New South Wales Nurses’ Association.

Jeremy’s scholarship will provide him with financial assistance to the value of $30,000 over the three full-time equivalent years of the Bachelor of Nursing. Student nurse, Jeremy Waun said, “This is a great opportunity and I am grateful to the Department of Health and Ageing for providing the funds and the Royal College of Nursing, Australia for administering the scholarship. It will be of great assistance throughout my degree.”

The Edith Cavell Trust Scholarship is awarded by The Edith Cavell Trust, which is a memorial to Edith Cavell, a British army nurse who was executed in Belgium in 1915. The $4000 scholarship will assist with Ellie’s study expenses in 2008. Ellie said she was thrilled to receive the assistance. “This sort of income support during full-time studies is of great help. It means I don’t need to work so many hours for my final year of nursing,” she said.

Dean of the Sydney School of Nursing, Professor Margot Kearns said, “We are thrilled that our students have been awarded these scholarships. The calibre of students enrolled at Notre Dame is very high and it is great to have some external recognition of their achievements.”
