Abstract

Four business students from The University of Notre Dame Australia, Fremantle beat the odds and 11 other teams to win one of Western Australia’s (WA) most prestigious student accounting competitions.

Deloitte Australia, one of Australia’s pre-eminent accounting firms, holds the competition every year. It gives WA accounting students the opportunity to apply knowledge to ‘real world’ situations, gain insight into the type of work performed by the Deloitte practice and meet with industry experts.

This was the first time a Notre Dame team had entered the competition. Students, Tom Francis, Sean Vincent, Ben Fountain and Seurina Maharaj came into the competition with a fresh, professional approach against teams from Curtin University, Murdoch University and The University of Western Australia.

Throughout the five week competition students used the skills and knowledge gained in the classroom to apply innovative thinking to solve a business case study. Each week, specific tasks were set to develop students’ presentation, problem solving and business skills in a high pressured environment.

Now dubbed the ‘Deloitte Dream Team 2007’ the students said they came into the competitions with no expectations, but knew they had to take a different approach to their task if they wanted to beat the other, more experienced, teams.

“I think we went into the competition without many expectations, but as the weeks progressed and we became a better team we did start to think we had a shot at the big prize,” said Tom Francis.

“Winning was the best feeling, it was the ultimate validation that we took a chance and chose a different angle to the other groups with our final presentation. I think the competition is invaluable for developing contacts who are already in the industry.”

The 'Dream Team' won a cheque for $1000 and paid vacation internships at Deloitte.
