Abstract
Minter Ellison solicitor and 2003 Notre Dame Law Graduate, Andrew Baker, has won the Australian National Golden Gavel Award. This award is given at an annual public speaking competition for young lawyers held under the auspices of the Australian Young Lawyers Association.
Golden Gavel State winners from around Australia recently competed in Queensland. Each competitor was required to present a comical, three-minute speech on a topic randomly assigned to them the day before. Andrew's topic was 'Lessons I have learnt from Mark Latham'!
When asked what his first thoughts were when given the topic, Andrew replied: "to rush out and buy the Latham Diaries, which became my bible."
Andrew won over the judges and the crowd by delivering a sermon, preaching from The Book of Mark - The Latham Diaries. He entertained the crowd with the four lessons that he has learned from "the wise one from Werriwa", including "sticks and stones may break their bones but a clever nick name will leave much deeper emotional scars, which take longer to heal."
