Abstract

Marsha Jacobs a graduate of The University of Notre Dame Australia won the highly coveted Best Newcomer award on Saturday night at the WA Media Awards. She beat a field of broadcast and print journalists and is officially the hot new talent in WA News!

Marsha Jacobs graduated from Notre Dame in 2003 with a double degree in Law and Arts. Upon graduation Ms Jacobs made the decision not to enter the legal practice as her experience in Arts had encouraged her to pursue a career in journalism. After several months of wondering if she made the right decision, not applying for articles, she got a job as a business journalist, which was everything that she wanted in a job.

"I am without hesitation that I have made the right decision, and my job allows me to do all the things I really love. I'm that annoying person who actually got their dream job. I get to meet incredibly interesting people every day from all sorts of backgrounds and hear their ideas, I have a lot of autonomy in what I do, I enjoy the writing and research, and then there is of course all the socialising," she said.

Ms Jacobs is currently a journalist with WA Business News, a weekly business paper with a team of six journalists.

"My law degree has given me a really good background for writing about business, and I use the skills I was taught at university every day. It helps a lot when talking to high level business people to have an understanding of what they are doing."
