Abstract

After only their second year playing as a team, The University of Notre Dame Australia’s Men’s Hockey team has returned to Fremantle with a Gold Medal from the 2011 AUSTRALIAN UNIVERSITY GAMES.

The games began in 1993 and each year the sporting schedule is made up of individual and team sports.

Queensland was the host for this year’s games which attracted 6,700 participants from across the country who competed in 29 different sports.

Athletics, Baseball, Golf, Beach Volleyball, Netball and Touch Rugby were just some of the sports teams from Notre Dame’s Fremantle and Sydney campuses competed in.

The impressive Men’s Hockey team finished with a Bronze medal their first year, qualifying them to compete in 2011.

“They definitely have become a formidable force,” says Fremantle Campus Sports Officer Jaimee Murphy, who accompanied the team to the national event.

“It was so exciting watching them win 4 - 1 against Deakin University,” said Mrs Murphy.

“They only lost one game during the week against the University of Ballarat.” “Our team included players with a range of skills and experience,” explains team captain, Jason Tate.

“I believe that it was through mate-ship and teamwork that we developed that we were able to win gold."
