Abstract

A victory for The University of Notre Dame Australia’s Fremantle law students was celebrated at the end of October when they competed in the Corrs Chambers Westgarth Deans’ List Forum.

Each year, the national law firm, Corrs Chambers Westgarth, hosts a competition for selected students from each of the four Law Schools in Western Australia. The competition, called the Deans’ List Forum, requires each Dean of the Law Schools to nominate penultimate year students based on academic and leadership excellence.

The competition is a mock hearing in a court, tribunal or commission. The topic is only released on the day of the hearing with students invited to use the company’s office and research facilities to prepare their presentations. The Hon. Justice Nicholas Paul Hasluck AM was the Chair of the judging panel.

This year, students Peter Jensen, Neal Kok and Ryan Purslowe competed successfully with Mr Kok also winning the best speaker of the Forum.

Mr Purslowe said that it was a fantastic event. “The competition provided our team with the opportunity to compare our legal knowledge and skills with students from the other universities. It was a great experience and fortunately Notre Dame came out on top!"

Dean of the School of Law, Fremantle, Associate Professor Jane Power was delighted with the victory.

“Our team well represented outstanding academic achievement, team cooperation and advocacy skills. They were well placed to make a great contribution to the Deans’ List Forum. The Law School is extremely proud of their achievement!”
