Abstract
Over 500 primary school students jumped, jostled and giggled when they mixed it with the ‘big’ boys and Johnny ‘The Doc’ Docker for an intense morning of football skills at the annual Fremantle Dockers’ Gala Day.
Along with their parents and teachers, they had gathered at Fremantle Oval to participate in the unique day which is a result of the collaboration between the Fremantle Dockers and The University of Notre Dame Australia’s Health and Physical Education (HPE) students.
Under the watchful eye of Notre Dame students, it was quite a sight to see the squad led by captain Matthew Pavlich and AFL tall man, Aaron Sandilands, taking the children through some fun and challenging football exercises.
As part of their Sports Event Management unit, 3rd year HPE students are required to coordinate a number of events throughout the semester. The gala day is the biggest event they run.
“The partnership between Notre Dame and Fremantle Dockers has grown significantly over the years,” explains student Paul Emery.
"Working with the Dockers’ administration to put together the Fremantle Dockers’ Gala Day has given us some practical, hands-on experience and confidence to plan and run sports events.
“It has also given us the opportunity to see what it takes to run not just a football team, but a football club!
“It's great to see the all the hard work and preparation by the students come together to produce a successful day. We would like to thank the Dockers’ Community Development Manager, Mr David Crute and Community Program Manager, Mr Wade Spickler for their support. We are proud to have contributed to the Notre Dame and Fremantle Football Club partnership and hope it continues,” said Mr Emery.
Dockers’ captain, Matthew Pavlich was also very positive about the partnership. He said that it was fantastic to have the opportunity to get involved with the schools and to get amongst the students.
“It really is an enjoyable experience and it’s great that we are able to work collaboratively with Notre Dame students. They do a fantastic job,” he said.
