Letters from New South Wales to King George’s Sound, 1826 to 1831

This group of letters dating between 4 November 1826 and 11 January 1831 are written by the Colonial Secretary of New South Wales Alexander McLeay to the four officers who at different times commanded the military station at King George Sound – Major Edmund Lockyer, Captain Joseph Wakefield, Lieutenant George Sleeman, and Captain Collet Barker. McLeay as Colonial Secretary was the ‘general medium of communication’ between New South Wales governor (Sir) Ralph Darling to colonists and outposts controlled by New South Wales such as Western Port, Raffles Bay, Moreton Bay, Port Essington, and King George Sound.

The letters and shorter memos provide instructions to the commanding officers and give replies to queries made by the men in previous communications with the governor. The originals are contained in two leather bound volumes, and with the exception of lists of convicts proceeding to King George Sound, are dated.
