Abstract
This paper provides an introduction to some of the preliminary ideas and findings of an Australian Research Council proposal in process, entitled, "State of Play: Birth and Beyond." This project investigates the role and significance of play and playfulness in building supportive and creative learning environments in educational contexts generally. For the purposes of this conference, this paper will focus on ideas and theories of play in early childhood settings, using the theories of Donald Winnicot, Johan Huizinger, Friedrich Froebel, and how these ideas of play in early childhood may be utilised in a tertiary teaching context.
