Abstract

Sydney ’s School of Law has been bolstered by the appointment of internationally renowned Professor Peter McGovern as its first resident Dean. Professor McGovern brings a wealth of experience to Notre Dame, including the distinction of being Dean of four American Law Schools. His career has traversed the fields of academia, military law, and government legislature, and this international experience augurs well for his vision for undergraduate and postgraduate legal studies at the Sydney School of Law.

Professor McGovern’s connection with Notre Dame began in the mid 1990s. During sabbatical leave, he came to Fremantle and assisted Professor Mary McComish on the plan to establish and consolidate Notre Dame’s Law School on the Fremantle Campus.

Professor McGovern says he was attracted to Notre Dame because of its focus on high quality, ethically responsible and mission-focused education. The quietly spoken and modest professor will bring a new perspective to legal education on Australia’s east coast.

“My commitment is to develop a solid reputation for our undergraduate law degree and also to develop unique postgraduate courses.

“I would like to see Notre Dame Graduates making a real contribution to the needs of the legal profession. The focus on ethics and the practical application of the Law are two differentiating characteristics of Notre Dame’s courses.”

Professor McGovern is active in the International Bar Association in areas of Cultural Property, Art Law, Mediation and Arbitration. He also serves in several consulting posts and mediates Domain Name issues. He researches and lectures in the area of International Business and the Sale of Art and Cultural Property.
