Abstract

The West End of Fremantle was again full of activity when The University of Notre Dame Australia’s Fremantle Campus opened its doors for the 2011 Enrolment Days held on 1 February.

Over 1200 new students will begin Semester One including, for the first time, students enrolling into the University’s new alternative entry pathway – Foundation Year.

The exciting new program is just one of the initiatives the University has developed to provide a diverse range of entry pathways for students.

“The Foundation Year’s focus is on success and skills development," explains Associate Professor Keith McNaught, Director of the University’s Academic Enabling and Support Centre.

“It is designed to introduce students to the demands of academic study such as research and critical thinking, language, academic writing and learning skills. We want to help them to achieve their goals as they move to undergraduate study.”

Students who successfully complete the Foundation Year receive a Record of Achievement and a Certificate of Attainment at the end of the course. In order to be admitted into the first year of undergraduate studies at Notre Dame, students must achieve a mark of 65% in each unit within the first semester and a pass grade in all second semester units.

After enrolment, the next big event for new students will be Orientation Week which will begin with the traditional Commencement Parade marking the commencement of academic life for the University.

Academic staff in full regalia, students and their families will join members of the community, including the Mayor and Fremantle Councillors, for the colourful parade through the streets of Fremantle.

The parade will be taking place on Thursday 24 February starting from the Malloy Courtyard on Mouat Street at 9.45am. For more information on the Commencement Ceremony, please contact the Student Life Office on 9433 0580.
