Abstract

Students from The University of Notre Dame Australia’s Sydney and Fremantle campuses have had great sporting success, winning two gold medals in 20/20 cricket.

The tournament was imbedded within the Indian Rim Asian University Games (IRAUG), meaning that there were two titles up for grabs, Australian Uni Championships and the IRAUG, with Notre Dame taking out both!

Cricket captain Michael Polson, 2009 graduate, Bachelor of Primary Education said, that he was very proud of the team.

“Everyone just chipped in and worked as a team,” he said.

“The quote I used throughout the games was ‘Getting the little one percents right.’ It was important to ensure all the little things were done right, not just the batting and bowling,” said Mr Polson.

Sydney Campus Sports Officer, Tristan Liles said, “The Team had a great start to the tournament with solid wins over Northern Territory University and University of New South Wales (UNSW). The team went on to win both their remaining pool matches against Sydney University and Murdoch University, which left them on top at the completion of the round robin stage.”

“Their semi final was against a red hot Queensland University of Technology side. Notre Dame was set a target of 120 runs which they chased down easily with two overs to spare. They then moved into the grand final and a rematch against UNSW was on the cards. Notre Dame notched up 149/6 after 20 overs with UNSW only able to scratch together a mere 77 runs after the 20 overs,” said Mr Liles.

Notre Dame has also competed in the IRAUG in men’s Rugby 7’s who placed 3rd out of 6 other universities in the finals and men’s tennis who placed 5th.

Sports Officer Jaimee Montgomery from the Fremantle Campus said, “Providing opportunities for our students to play in an international event has created a strong bond between the players and has created university memories that will last a lifetime.”

“Notre Dame is so proud of all three teams that participated in the IRAUG,” she said.
