Abstract

The University of Notre Dame Australia will host an international conference in 2013 on the theme of Tradition. The conference is co-hosted by the Archdiocese of Sydney.

The event will take place at the Sydney Campus between 2 and 5 July 2013. The programme aims to bring together prominent national and international scholars in Philosophy and Theology to explore philosophical and theological senses of 'Tradition'.

Distinguished speakers include Professor John Haldane (University of St Andrews, UK), Professor Matthew Levering (University of Dayton, Ohio), Professor Mark Kingwell (University of Toronto, Canada), Professor Christian Brugger (St John Vianney Theological Seminary, Denver), Professor Nancy Sherman (Georgetown University, USA), Professor Timothy Chappell (The Open University, UK) and Professor Mary Prudence Allen RSM (St John Vianney Theological Seminary, Denver).

International speakers will be joined by a host of intellectual figures from around Australia. Discussion will centre around the concept of Sacred Tradition; how Sacred Tradition relates to other aspects of tradition that contribute to the faith; how traditions guide (or undermine) human behavior and relationships; and whether tradition is a defensible and valuable concept.

The centerpiece of the International Conference will be a Public Debate Chaired by Phillip Adams and aired on ABC Radio National. Two major academics and expert media performers, Professor John Haldane and Professor Mark Kingwell, will weigh into the contemporary question: "Religious Traditions: Friends or Foes of Freedom?"

Registrations for Tradition Conference 2013 are now open and all are warmly invited to register. Excellent early bird rates are available. For more information, please see the Tradition Conference 2013 website tradition2013.nd.edu.au, or emailtradition2013@nd.edu.au.
