Abstract

Law students taking the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) unit at The University of Notre Dame Australia have gained invaluable insights into ADR from Dr Fredrike Bannink, a world leader in ADR techniques.

Dr Bannink was a Keynote Speaker at the National Mediation Conference being held in Sydney and was invited to visit Notre Dame by School of Law Senior Lecturer Francisco Esparraga. It was the only presentation she made to law students in Australia.

A clinical psychologist with a Master of Dispute Resolution from the University of Amsterdam, Dr Bannink specialises in solution focused coaching and solution focused leadership and mediation. She is also an internationally certified ADR mediator who has written and spoken extensively on the subject. As a foundation member of Mediators Beyond Borders, Dr Bannink was able to impart her extensive knowledge upon Notre Dame's ADR students by engaging them in practice-based exercises and activities.

Law student Jake Lowther said he and his peers appreciated the unique opportunity they had to engage with a world leader in this field.

"Dr Bannink's lecture was eye-opening and it demonstrated the psychological aspects of ADR, particularly in relation to mediation," Mr Lowther said.

"Dr Bannink stressed that the legal practitioner must focus, not on problems presented, but on solutions. She showed us an approach often alien to law students who are frequently assessed through 'problem questions.'"

The School of Law arranges for guest speakers to visit its classrooms on a regular basis in order for students to connect with experienced practitioners of complex and specialised fields.
