Abstract

The University of Notre Dame Australia has secured back-to-back titles in the mixed futsal tournament as part of the 2012 Tertiary Sports Western Australia Inter-University Sport competition.

Undefeated throughout the tournament, the Notre Dame team triumphed over the University of Western Australia (UWA), Murdoch University, Curtin University, Edith Cowan University (ECU) and the Central Institute of Technology to be recognised as the best tertiary futsal team in the State for 2012.

Two of Notre Dame's athletes were also recognised by Tertiary Sports WA for being the best male and female players at the event.

The Alcoholthinkagain Fairest and Best Male Futsal Player at the tournament was Bachelor of Commerce student, Bruno Rocha. Perth Glory Women's player, Matildas' representative and Bachelor of Sport and Recreation Management student, Ella Mastrantonio, was awarded the Alcoholthinkagain Fairest and Best Female Futsal player.

Ms Mastrantonio, who made her international soccer debut for Australia against Japan in June 2008, said the tournament was a wonderful event to be part of.

"It was an honour to be recognised as the best female player at the tournament. The team performed exceptionally well and to walk away with the first placed trophy, in addition to the individual award, was wonderful," Ms Mastrantonio said.

Notre Dame student and international futsal representative, Daniel Cappellaro, said the highlight was being able to represent the University in a major State sporting competition.

"For me, Notre Dame is more than just an educational experience. I felt proud to represent the University at the futsal tournament against top competitors from other institutions," Mr Cappellaro said.

"It is wonderful to be able to lift the trophy over two consecutive years having played the tournament with good friends and enjoying myself in the process."

In other inter-university events held by Tertiary Sports WA in 2012, Notre Dame won first place in men's and mixed beach volleyball, and women's touch football.
