Abstract

A Study Abroad student at The University of Notre Dame Australia's Fremantle Campus has described the thrill of running in Perth's famous City to Surf as "absolutely fantastic" and "an experience of a life time".

Kathryn Fuller, a Nursing student from the University of Portland, USA, said participating in the run broadened her experience as an international student in Australia beyond the 'on-campus' life.

Ms Fuller attempted to complete the 12km run in under 80 minutes, with the overarching goal of running the distance without stopping. She crossed the finish line in 71 minutes.

Ms Fuller said the hill climbs throughout the event were relentless, but the atmosphere of running with 45,000 other participants motivated her to cross the finish line within her targeted time.

"I had no idea how long it would take me as I had never run that far before in my life, but it was such an amazing experience," Ms Fuller said

"A big reason for me participating in the City to Surf run was to experience as much as possible during my time here in Western Australia.

"During the run, I got to meet a lot of different people and talk with them to hear about life in Perth. The highlight for me was running through the city itself and seeing all the beautiful sights that Perth has."

The University's team consisted of 94 participants including domestic students, international students, Study Abroad students, staff members, family and friends.

Notre Dame's athletes competed in all of the distances including the marathon, half marathon, 12km walk and run, and the 4km walk and run.

"It was great to see the blue and white shirts of our Notre Dame team scattered amongst the thousands of runners and walkers who participated in the City to Surf event," Sports Officer at Notre Dame's Fremantle Campus, Natasha Tench said.

"Hopefully we can encourage more international students to participate in the event next year having had such a strong and willing cohort enter this year."
