Abstract

Professor Douglas Hodgson has been appointed as the new Dean of the School of Law at The University of Notre Dame Australia's Fremantle Campus.

Professor Hodgson's career as an academic lawyer has spanned three decades. After graduating with a Bachelor of Laws degree from York University, Professor Hodgson completed a Master of Laws degree at the University of London. After his call to the Bar of the Province of Ontario, Canada as a Barrister and Solicitor, he worked as a Crown Prosecutor before embarking on a Law teaching career at Monash University and subsequently at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand.

In 1989, Professor Hodgson joined the Faculty of Law of The University of Western Australia (UWA). During his tenure at UWA, he served as Sub-Dean (Students), the legal representative of the Human Research Ethics Committee and as a member of the International Humanitarian Law Committee of the Australian Red Cross.

Vice Chancellor, Professor Celia Hammond, welcomed Professor Hodgson's appointment.

"Professor Hodgson brings a superb record of academic achievement to the role gained through extensive experience at a number of Australian and international universities," explains Professor Hammond.

"His impressive career is testament to his passion and commitment to the law profession, and to improving the quality of law education."

Professor Hodgson's teaching and research interests include Torts Law, Public International Law, International Human Rights Law, the Law of Armed Conflict, International Refugee Law and International Criminal Law. He has published four books and numerous articles in peer-reviewed international law journals on the human right to education, human rights/duties discourse, the protection of the international human rights of children, and causation problems in the civil law context.

Professor Hodgson said he is looking forward to taking up his appointment as Dean in January 2013.

"I am excited about the new challenges, responsibilities and opportunities associated with my new role as the Dean of the School of Law at Notre Dame's Fremantle Campus," said Professor Hodgson.

"I look forward to the opportunity of contributing and further developing the School which has established a reputation of providing outstanding law graduates."
