Abstract

The Vice Chancellor of The University of Notre Dame Australia, Dr Peter Tannock, today expressed great satisfaction at the acceptance by the Chief Justice of Western Australia, the Hon David Malcolm AC, of an appointment to a Chair of Law at the University, commencing in February 2006. The Vice Chancellor said that Professor Malcolm would be based at the Fremantle Campus of the University where he would teach law to undergraduate students enrolled in the Bachelor of Laws course. He would also engage with both students and staff on an informal basis, enabling them to benefit from his vast knowledge and experience of the law. He would also spend time at the University's Sydney and Broome Campuses. The University is opening a Law School at its new Sydney Campus in February 2006. The Vice Chancellor said that Professor Malcolm would be a major contributor to the foundation of the Sydney Law School.

Professor Malcolm has had substantial involvement with Notre Dame's Law School in Fremantle since it commenced eight years ago. He has made many contributions to its teaching program and its legal practice training. He had also employed Notre Dame graduates as his Associates.

Dr Tannock said: "David Malcolm is one of the finest legal minds and jurists in Western Australian history. He is a great lawyer and an internationally recognised expert in many areas of legal practice and policy. He has an extensive State, national, and inter-national network of colleagues in the field of Law. He has also been a great contributor to the Western Australian and Australian communities in many fields," he said.

Dr Tannock said "The University of Notre Dame is absolutely delighted that he has chosen to take up a Chair at our Law School. He will be a major force in its advancement and in developing our law students in the years ahead. We believe our students and our staff are very fortunate indeed to have the opportunity to relate closely to such an outstanding Australian legal figure".
