Abstract

Law students from The University of Notre Dame Australia’s Fremantle Campus excelled against the larger Law Schools around Australia at this year’s Australian Law Schools Association (ALSA) national competitions.

ALSA is an association comprising all Law Student Societies and Law Student’s Associations nationally, representing approximately 28,000 law students.

Each year the law students are invited to compete in areas such as Mooting, Witness Examination (known at some universities as Trial Advocacy), Negotiation, Client Interviewing and Paper Presentation.

Winners of these competitions at each university are then eligible to represent their university at the National Championship Finals held at ALSA's annual conference.

Final year students, Jess Stokes, Dan Chaney and Rebecca Johnston all competed in the Moot Competition and Emma Douglas and Ben Martin competed in the Client Interview.

Emily Keys and Jason Myers made it to the grand final of the Negotiation Competition and eventually came second. Vice President (Education and Careers) of the Notre Dame Law Students' Society, Emma Cullen, made it to the semi finals of Witness Examination and was just beaten by the eventual winner.

Emma said, "This year the Notre Dame ALSA delegation was the biggest and best it has ever been. The Negotiations competitors were particularly successful coming in at second place and the level of support provided by the rest of the delegation was fantastic.

“We are also indebted to the ALSA Conference Committee and the University of Tasmania who put together an excellent conference. There was a very high standard in each of the competitions and the judges, including the Governor of Tasmania, His Excellency Peter Underwood AO and former Chief Justice of the High Court, Sir Anthony Mason, were exceptional. It was an invaluable experience for all of us involved."

Associate Professor Jane Power, Dean of the School of Law, Fremantle, said that the students are a credit to themselves and the Law School. “To compete and achieve success at a national level against Law Schools, many of which have a much larger student population, says a great deal about the calibre of our students.”
