Abstract

Vice Chancellor, Professor Celia Hammond has announced the appointment of Dr Christine Bennett as the new Dean of the School of Medicine, Sydney, commencing on Monday 2 May 2011.

Professor Hammond said Dr Bennett was selected following a wide ranging international recruitment process.

“Dr Bennett’s impressive record of achievements is testimony to her passion and commitment to the health profession and to improving the quality of health services provided throughout Australia.

“The University believes that this passion, combined with her drive and energy, will be invaluable to the further development of the School of Medicine in Sydney and particularly beneficial to our medical students.” said Professor Hammond.

Dr Bennett completed her MBBS at the University of Sydney in 1979, her Masters in Paediatrics at the University of New South Wales in 1987 and became a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians in 1987.

Dr Bennett has worked in the New South Wales Department of Health, including time as General Manager for the Royal Hospital for Women, Director of Clinical Services and Population Health at the South Eastern Sydney Area Health Service and CEO of Westmead Hospital and Community Health Services. Over the last nine years, Dr Bennett has worked for Bupa Australia and Bupa International Markets (previously MBF), most recently in the role of Chief Medical Officer and Director of Healthcare Leadership.

In addition to Dr Bennett’s diverse health industry experience in clinical care, strategic planning and senior management in the public and private health systems, she has been committed to and actively involved in medical professional issues, clinical governance, child and family health, social policy and medical research.

Dr Bennett chaired the National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission in 2008/2009, and continues to chair Research Australia Ltd and is a board member of Obesity Australia and HeartWare Inc.

The University of Notre Dame Australia’s School of Medicine, Sydney, is in its fourth year of operation with over 400 graduate students enrolled. Students undertake clinical placements in urban and rural New South Wales and Victoria.
