Abstract

This essay will compare a paradigm of liturgical translation proposed by Anscar Chupungco, with two alternate paradigms of translation drawn from the work of anthropologists E. E. Evans-Pritchard and Stanley Tambiah, and systematic theologian George Lindbeck. The process of liturgical inculturation by which the Catholic Church has attempted to place its "official worship" in dialogue with different cultural frameworks and modes of expression of diverse peoples, consists largely of translation.

My aim in this essay is to elicit some insights into and implications for the Roman Catholic approach to liturgical inculturation and liturgical translation in general.
