Human Resource Management: in Australia and New Zealand provides a comprehensive approach to the subject. Firstly, it provides the reader with a perspective covering both the Australian and New Zealand contexts. Secondly, it integrates behavioural aspects aligned to organisation behaviour in the overall context of the management of people in the workplace. The book deliberately includes chapters on motivation and teamwork to give a practical approach in exploring the interdependency between human resources and organisational behaviour in the workplace. Thirdly, the themes in the book address contemporary issues which cover specific human resource components such as human resources information systems (HRIS) and equal employment opportunity (EEO). This provides learners with an overall perspective of not only the human resource functions, but also the more contemporary issues that impact on the core functions of human resource management. Fourthly, the chapter on international human resource management in particular focuses on issues extending beyond standard human resources within a particular country. It also provides the international perspective necessitated by the global economy within which both Australian and New Zealand organisations operate.

Twenty years ago, John Taylor proposed a simple idea to guide monetary policy. Quickly the idea spread, not only through academia, but also to the trading floors of Wall Street and the Federal Reserve's boardroom in Washington. Now, two decades later, the Taylor rule remains a focal point for discussions of monetary policy around the world.

In The Taylor Rule and the Transformation of Monetary Policy, a veritable contributors' "who's who" from the academic and policy communities explain and provide perspectives on John Taylor's revolutionary thinking about monetary policy. From the Great Inflation of the 1970s through the Great Moderation of the 1980s and 1990s to the Great Deviation following the 2001 recession, the contributors analyze Taylor's influences on monetary theory and policy around the world. They explore some of the literature that Taylor inspired and help us understand how the new ways of thinking that he pioneered have influenced actual policy here and abroad.

Sex, sailors and colonies: Narratives of ambiguity in the works of Pierre Loti

This book focuses on the oeuvre of nineteenth-century author and naval captain Julien Viaud (1850-1923) who wrote under the pseudonym Pierre Loti. Considered a best-seller in his day and a distinguished naval figure, Loti's contribution to French naval and literary history is significant. This work suggests a new reading of Loti's literature that positions his texts within the critical theoretical paradigms of Postcolonialism and Queer Theory. This study examines both Loti's fictional and non-fictional opus. It explores the dominant themes relayed throughout his oeuvre including his portrayal of exotic sexuality as being underpinned by a desire to elude articulation, his uncertain approach to colonialism given the constant shift between his identity as a colonising sailor and sympathising exoticist and Loti's own self-representation in both his fictional and non-fictional works. His constant re-invention of «Pierre Loti» as a persona in his writing creates a question about who Loti really is and how much of the man is represented in the so-called autobiographical text. These seemingly disparate themes of sexuality, colonialism and personal identity are all interrogated as posssible sites of ambiguity, thus revealing the general scope and complexity of Loti's work. Having examined the structure of influence within the Keynesian and the Anti-Keynesian Traditions, (volume 1 and 2), this volume, the third of the trilogy, focuses more directly on economists and it highlights a multi-layered structure of influence within the policy process. Unpublished archival evidence illuminates aspects of the process by which the USA emerged as a dominant player in the world economy. [From Publisher's website]

The deterioration of forest resources and poor economic performance in the Philippines calls for a serious rethinking in economic policies addressing both environmental and economic objectives. In order to protect the Philippine forests, the government implemented the Master Plan for Forestry Development covering a 25-year period (i.e. 1991-2015). However, after 16 years of implementation, the Philippine forestry industry has experienced a further reduction in production and in areas devoted to old-growth forests. The annual allowable cut remains excessive as it was prior to 1990. This proves to be an important forestry policy instrument as the findings in this book suggest that the volume of timber or the rate of deforestation is directly affected by the annual allowable cut rather than by population growth and poverty.

Human service community NGOs occupy a significant position in western civil society, holding roles such as employer, service provider, volunteer, carer, victim, advocate, partner and leader. They claim a shared philosophical and moral basis to support these roles and this unquestioned assumption causes significant consequences for their future as they embrace commercial practices and governance models. Does the NGO have the capacity to provide ethical leadership now with its shifting values systems, an increasing loss of meaningful relationships as defined by spiritual formation and entrenched gender discrimination in a postmodern, global environment? All this indicates a collapse in NGO activities through leadership fragmentation and a rise in managerial and bureaucratic technocracy. The book uses postmodernism, feminism and narrative practices to explore relationships within NGOs between employers and employees on leadership, ethics, values and spirituality. It examines emerging tensions on faith, gender, business operations and asks ‘what next?’. The book is intended for community, government and business professionals and leaders who work with human service NGOs.

A feminist critique of the role of women in charitable organisations

Charities and nonprofit (NP) organisations are an accepted feature of Australian civil society. In 2006-07 it was estimated there were 700,000 in the nonprofit sector. The most economically significant NPs employed 995,000 people. In 2008, 87% of these were women. This workforce gender profile has not changed throughout the sector’s history and it has significant implications for how care work is conceptualised, valued and included in broader society, politically, economically and culturally. This is a feminist critique of women’s experience of working in charities. It explores the Australian context, feminist philosophy, ethics, leadership, spirituality, power and business reality of charitable work as women’s work; with its impact on the recipients of charitable services. This book offers an interpretation of the underlying assumptions of Australian charities’ philosophical constructs, the different role they hold in society and a feminist perspective of the women ‘s experience who work within them. Anyone who works with charities or is researching the sector and its contribution to Australian life will be interested in the book.

Henri Fayol, (1841-1925) along with F. W. Taylor, is one of the founders of 'classical management'. Fayol's work was the first significant attempt to develop principles of top-level management and one of the first attempts to analyse the different activities that constitute management. Fayol viewed management as a process of administration consisting of five activities: planning/forecasting, organizing, co-ordinating, commanding and controlling. These two volumes place Fayol's ideas in their historical context and provide access to his key writings. The set includes assessments of his work by his contemporaries, as well as current thinking about his ideas on management. In two volumes. (Accessed from Publisher)

Henry Ford was an eccentric, and occasionally enlightened, thinker and remains a controversial figure today. He developed F.W. Taylor's ideas of scientific management (the subject of another four volume collection in this series), turning them into a whole 'system of production'. Ford's system was characterized by highly efficient, high volume and vertically integrated production, with high wages and low prices.
Husband and wife, Frank Gilbreth (1868-1924) and Lilian Gilbreth (1878-1972), are the figures most closely identified with time and motion studies. Pushing F.W. Taylor's ideas to the limit, they sought ways to determine 'the one best way to do work'. Their lasting influence is evident in the fact that the process charts and other techniques they devised remain essentially unchanged in modern systems analysis. Along with this, they were also interested in the human aspect of work, emphasizing the need for training and worker involvement. The collection makes available, in one place, some of the most significant writings gathered from a variety of sources. The works are invaluable, not only for reference purposes, but as contributions to the history of management thought as well as the analysis of contemporary theory and the study of strategic management.
