Abstract
In J. S. Battye's version of Westralian history, progress was linked to 'the subjugation of the Aborigine'.2 A central figure in the construction of this state's past, Battye was an adamant supporter of the gentry tradition and set the tone for history writing to celebrate that tradition. The historical record is therefore ideologically biased and scholars today must scrape beneath its surface to discover other perspectives. In this paper, I will do so with reference to the heritage of East Perth.
